Wednesday, April 2, 2008 - Open to the public: On the day that has been designated as World Autism Day, please come experience "A Day in the Music: The Ellington Legacy" - 6:30 p.m. and also hear from Kathy Flynn, co-producer of this documentary which features Edward Ellington and the Ellington Legacy band in a performance held at P.S. 37, a New York City public school for special education students. The video examines the extraordinary impact of Duke Ellington's music on autistic students. In the video, Edward Ellington offers unique insites into the creative processes of his grandfather, Duke Ellington. He also talks about the history of jazz and its importance as an educational resource and learning tool. The P.S. 37 educators involved in this project describe how the educational materials developed and implemented center around the special needs of autistic students. This actual concert featuring Duke Ellington's work is a special treat for students, teachers and viewers alike. "A Day in the Music: The Ellington Legacy" has been honored with video industry awards including two Telly Awards; the Communicator and the Videographer Awards. Friday, April 4, 2008 - Staff Training at Cedar Grove Public Library for Cedar Grove Public Library and Caldwell Public Library Staff - all day. Karen Kleppe Lembo will share the details from the March, 28th viewing of "Normal People Scare Me" and discuss "Customer Service" as it pertains to the special needs of the autistic community, and their families. (INFOLINK is assisting CGPL and CPL in paying for this training; this is not being paid for from the monies for this project.)
Friday, June 13, 2008 - Open to the public: Join us at 7 p.m. at the Caldwell Community Center as we welcome Helen A. Hoens, mother, wife and NJ Supreme Court Associate Justice. Her now-adult son, Charles, was diagnosed with autism at the age of 3. We are most grateful to Justice Hoens for sharing her stories and lessons learned from her son.
