Autism Family Resource Center

The East Brunswick Public Library has launched a “Family Resource Collection” for families whose child has been diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum.  The Family Resource Collection includes many new books and media materials to help families educate themselves about Autism and to offer practical techniques for raising a child with Autism.  The library has also partnered with the East Brunswick Public Schools so that teacher resource collections could be placed in the Media Centers of Hammarskjold Middle School, Chittick and Central Elementary Schools.

Notes

The First sibling support group was offered by The Library from February 2008-June 2008.

The Library planned the support group meeting to take place at the same time that the parents of children with autism attend a Special Education PTA meeting at the library.  The Special Education PTA provides childcare during their meeting which means that parents, children with autism and their siblings can come to the library together and attend their own meetings.  This does require 3 seperate meeting rooms which is not always easy to arrange but it was a wonderful success and all participants seemed to be pleased.

The Library began its second cycle of the sibling support group in October 2008 and it will continue until June 2009.  From feedback from the participants in the first support group it was decided to run the support group every other Monday and to split into two support groups:   one for 8, 9, 10, years old and the second for 11, 12, 13, 14 years old.  The younger aged siblings are meeting at 4:00 pm and the older group meets at 5:30 pm.

Next Steps:

2nd cycle of sibling support group:

Date:  November 10, 2008

Time: 4:00 pm for ages 8,9, 10;   5:30 pm for ages 11,12,13,14.
